Tom Smith says that any tag of ‘favourites’ given to Northampton Saints ahead of this weekend’s EDF Energy National Trophy final is irrelevant.
Saints take their unbeaten record to Twickenham for the final against Exeter Chiefs, and former British Lion prop Smith says that the playing squad are only thinking about the task in hand.

It is the third meeting between the two clubs this season and Smith says that nothing will be taken for granted in the build-up to the match.

“We’ve lived with the mantle all season,” he commented. “It’s not going to be in our thinking come noon on Saturday. We’re going to be concentrating on what we can do. We played Exeter only a few weeks ago and we accept that they’re going to be a different team this weekend.

“But we don’t base too much on what we expect of them. We’re not preoccupied with our opponents. If you do that there is always a shock if they change tactics.”

Smith is the only member of the current Saints squad to have played in the club’s two previous trips to Twickenham, and he acknowledges the importance of Saturday’s occasion.

“A Twickenham final is a big thing,” he says. “Winning a trophy is something to look back on. It goes down in the history of the club. It also means a lot to the players, fans and the town – all people who you know. The significance of the day won’t be lost on anyone.

“We’ve had a tough journey to the final. It will be nice to end that journey well."
